During the Walk
The Peaks MC committee and members are very grateful to you, the Leaders for your ongoing commitment to the club. Many Thanks.
- Please make contact with the Co Leader to discuss a plan for the day.
- Decide on a route that will be appropriate to the grade of the walk.
- Get an up-to-date Weather Forecast for the day.
- Prepare a Route Card. Include possible alternative emergency escape routes.
- Please ensure that you have all the necessary gear and equipment for leading a group for a full day on the mountains.
At Eldons
- Introduce yourself and the Co Leader (and any new walkers.)
- Ensure that everyone is properly equipped with appropriate footwear, waterproof and windproof clothing, food, drink and head torch. Remind participants that they are responsible for their own medical needs.
- Give a brief outline of where the walk is taking place, where the start is and where to park.
- Check that all drivers know where to go, that everyone has a lift and keep the number of cars to a minimum.
At the Start of the Walk
- Ensure that everyone signs in with name and mobile no. Please bring this sheet with you during the walk.
- Give a more detailed outline of the intended route, how long it will take and the ETA back to the cars.
- Give the group some safety guidance e.g. about staying together, informing the Leader if any difficulties should arise, medical or otherwise.
During the Walk
- You should set a pace which is appropriate to the grade of the walk, taking rest stops at regular intervals and keeping the group informed about food stops etc.
- The Co Leader must ensure that the group stays together doing a regular head count. Particular care should be given to any new walkers.
- If any difficulties should arise, or if the pace is slower than expected, you should always be prepared to alter, or shorten the route by means of an alternative escape route already identified during the planning stage.
- The participants should be encouraged to become more environmentally aware during the walk. The principles of Leave No Trace (printed on most OSI maps) can be referred to for this purpose.
- The Leaders confirms that everyone is back.
- The Leader could seek some feedback about the walk from the group, i.e. the suitability of the route and the pace etc.
- Return the Waiver Sheet to the committee.
