Sunday was a good day for walking and Flann Real and Fiona Hegarty had a full house with 26 walkers out for the noon walk. Flann and Fiona had a loop of Knockshanhullion planned and parked their charges at Laughlin’s Bridge and set off for Baylough. On southwards pass the shrine and up the rocky trail to the woody path and a spot of lunch.
Fed and somewhat rested it was a westward course to the high spot and then a swing northwards to the tree line. Picking up the track it was civilised walking back to the end of Baylough and down to the cars after covering a taste less than 12 kilometres of open mountain. John Byrne led the early walk and he parked at Gotenbridge near the waterworks and headed up the staira aka St Declan’s Way to the coll between Knocknagnauv and Knockmealdown with a pit stop in the shelter of the wall. Onwards and upwards to the top of the big one and over to Sugarloaf and after paying their respects to Grubb they hit the road. The hard going on the tar and chips soon ended as John led in the track at the hairpin bend which dropped his crew of 15 to the Coillte bridge and the Munster way back to the cars. The height gain was over 800 meters and the distance covered in a time of 6 hours.
This was a most convivial walk with a lively exchange of views on world affairs and a lovely
introduction to Rosemary and Kevin on the wonders of the mountains and the hardy folk in
the Peaks Club. Next walks are on the Galtees and the date is the 6 th November as we have a
bank holiday in between. The early walk is led by Ken Quinlivan and the noon leader is
Anthony Doyle with Flann Real assisting. The advice is as always come equipped for a full
day on the mountains and note that if not properly attired for the task the leader can refuse
to let you join the walk.
Club member Michael Tobin summitted the Matterhorn this July. Accompanied by Noel Cunneen, the intrepid pair left the Hornli Hut at 4.14am for the summit ascent and reached it just before midday. Their descent took eleven hours making the total climb a gruelling nineteen hours. Well done Michael, a great achievement and a thumbs up for senior citizens!
Sunday last saw twenty one club members take on the two classic walks in the Corrantuathail area of the Reeks. Ken Quinlivan led a party of nine up O Sheas gully to the top then around the East Ridge and back to Kate Kearneys. Jim O Flaherty led his party of twelve up Caher to the top then across the Benkeeragh Ridge to complete the Coumloughra Horseshoe. Two very fine walks with no less than seven members standing on the summit of Corrantuathail for the first time. Well done everyone.
When nature smiles it is a dazzling event and there was a broad smile on her face today as she gave us perfect conditions for walking the Knockmealdowns and we enjoyed every minute of the day. Ken Quinlivan led the early walk and he parked up at Graigue Pub and set off on the Munster Way for Knockshane.
Lunch was partaken in glorious sunshine with convivial conversation before Ken led off down to the pair of lakes under Knockmealdown. Ken then informed his crew that they were going up the north side of the “big un” and once on top it was all smiles and good cheer. This is reputed to be Pascal’s favourite ascent and very enjoyable. All the hard work done the only way was down and through the woods, streams and waterfalls and the pleasant walk back to the cars at Graigue and gentle rehydration.
Nora Phelan led the noon walk and Nora had ten walkers. Parking at Baylough it was a scenic stroll to the lough and the track onto Knockshanhullion at the back of Baylough. The sound of the cuckoo was all about and the glorious sunshine may have had something to do with this exotic avian visitors calling. Picking up the Munster way Nora and Anthony gently led back to the cars all in good order.
Reminder that the Club has a trip to Kerry planned for Sunday the 14th weather permitting. The bus will leave Eldon’s at 7.30am for the trip and bring all the gear and some folding for the meal and refreshment afterwards
